Hi Jess
The golden mole your dogs killed is not Juliana's golden mole, but a Hottentot golden mole (Amblysomus hottentotus). This species is very common in KZN, E Cape and the south-eastern parts of Mpumalanga.
I have attached a species account from the soon-to-be-published "Mammals of Africa" that eoutlines what we know about the biology of this species.
Best wishes
Gary

The mole looks to me like a Hottentot golden mole that is found in the Durban and Pietermaritzburg area. The scientific name is Amblysomus hottentotus.
Juliana's golden mole is found in the Bronberg of Pretoria, the area around Nylstroom and potentially the Kruger park.
There are no Juliana golden moles in the Natal Province.
All the very best, Nigel

Hi,
I live in Pietermaritzburg and am sure that I have found this same mole in my garden. Could this be possible?
From what I read on the article I found on the internet, (http://www.ponycamp.co.za/JulianasGoldenMole.htm)
This mole is only found in the Pretoria area.
Some time back my dogs killed one in my garden after the mole had tunnelled and turned my lawn up-side-down.
We did not only find mole heaps but where ever the tunnel was, the soil was raised a little.
This afternoon I again found a dead mole that was killed by my dogs. I have attached a Photograph of this mole.
I would be keen to find out more on this mole.
Kind Regards
Jess & Lynda Jessnitz
